Updated September 2026
The safety leash connects your harness to the kite's safety line. When you punch out the chicken loop, it keeps the flagged-out kite attached to you. After the quick release, it's the most critical piece of your gear, and the most often overlooked. A board leash, on the other hand, is only really suitable for lessons or in confined water. At GlissEvolution, a shop based in Pornichet since 2005, we always check leash compatibility with your bar before selling you one. This section is part of our kite accessories; also see our kite bars, harness accessories, and wing leash.
Short or Long Leash?
The short leash, from 40 to 60 cm, is the go-to for freeride and the majority of riders. It stays out of the way, doesn't get tangled, and is all you need as long as you aren't passing the bar behind your back. The long leash, which has an elasticated section, is for unhooked freestyle and wakestyle, where you need to get the bar away from your body for bar passes. The Short Safety Leash and the ION Kite Safety Leash Core Long cover both needs. The Duotone Safety Leash comes in a long version and a neoprene-covered version that's softer on the skin.
What bars is it compatible with?
The leash attaches to your harness on one end (on a ring or dedicated attachment point) and to the bar's safety line on the other, using a carabiner or a loop depending on the brand. The F-ONE Safety Leash, Duotone Safety Leash, and ION Kite Safety Leash will fit most modern bars, but some release systems need their own specific leash. Bring your bar to the shop, or just tell us the brand and year, and we'll check for you.
The Leash Quick Release
A kitesurf safety leash has its own quick release, located at the harness end, to completely detach from your kite as a last resort. Test it on land at the start of every season and rinse it after every session. Salt and sand will cause the mechanism to seize up. A leash that won't release must be replaced, not repaired.
Board Leash: When to Use One?
A board leash is not recommended for general freeriding. A board recoiling on a leash can snap back and hit the rider. They are used during lessons, along with a helmet and impact vest, and for some surf-style kiteboards on flat water. This section also has North Kiteboarding replacement leash ends for boards and kites.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a safety leash mandatory for kitesurfing?
It's not legally required in France for independent riding, but riding without one means you'll lose your kite every time you activate your release, creating a hazard for others. Schools and regulated spots require them.
Short or long leash for beginners?
Go short. It won't get in your way, won't tangle in the lines, and releases just the same. The long leash is only for unhooked freestyle.
Is my leash compatible with my bar?
Most likely, yes. Just tell us the brand and year of your bar, and we'll check the connection type for you before we ship.
Do I need a board leash?
No, not for general freeriding, as the board can snap back at you. Yes, for lessons or in confined flat water, but always with a helmet and an impact vest.
Where can I buy a kitesurf leash?
At GlissEvolution, online or at our shop in Pornichet. If you come in person, we'll fit it to your bar to make sure everything is compatible.
