Learn moreKitesurf and wing foil helmets: protect your head without sacrificing hearing or vision
Updated October 2026
When you're foiling, the board and those sharp carbon wings can be a real hazard, especially if they come down near your head. Kitesurfing brings its own risks: botched jumps, rocks, jetties, and other riders. A good helmet shields you from these impacts without getting in the way of your ride. It needs to be light, fit perfectly, and suit your riding style. Here at GlissEvolution, our team of passionate riders has been based in Pornichet since 2005. We'll help you pick the right gear, whether it's a hard-shell helmet, a soft protective beanie, or a model with a visor. This section is all about safety. To round out your protection, check out our kitesurf impact vests and wing foil vests.
Hard shell or soft beanie?
The hard-shell helmet (like the Mystic Vandal and Vandal Pro, Forward WIP Wiflex Pro 2.0 and X-Over, Ride Engine Charger, or ION Slash) spreads out the force of a direct hit from a board or foil. This is our top recommendation for wing foil, kitefoil, and anyone just starting out. The soft protective beanie (such as the Armstrong Bucket Bump Hat, Forward WIP Bob Bump Shell, or Manera S-Foam) cushions minor bumps, keeps you warm, and is so comfortable you'll forget you're wearing it. It's great for surf foil and riders who find hard helmets bulky, but it offers less protection. The Bangproof Bucket strikes a balance, combining a bucket hat shape with internal protection.
Which helmet is right for your riding style?
- For wing foil and kitefoil, go for a hard shell with covered or protected ears. A visor is a smart addition if you're riding in the sun. The Forward WIP X-Over Visor and Mystic Vandal Pro are specifically designed for foil.
- For kitesurf freeride and freestyle, you need a lightweight, ventilated shell that won't fill with water when you crash. Check out the Mystic Vandal, Ride Engine Charger, ION Slash Core, and Slash Amp.
- When learning and at school, a full-coverage hard shell with simple adjustments is key. Wear your helmet from your very first sessions, as this is when you'll be taking the most tumbles.
- For enhanced protection, the ION Scrub Select MIPS includes a MIPS system. This technology helps reduce rotational forces on your head during an impact.
How do I choose the right size?
Measure your head circumference just above your eyebrows and ears. Then, check the brand's size chart on the product page. Your helmet should stay put without the chin strap, not move when you shake your head, and have no pressure points. If you ride in winter with a hood, try the helmet on with it. Replacement Mystic ear pads are available for some models.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a helmet mandatory for kitesurfing or wing foiling?
While there's no legal requirement for recreational riding in France, schools do mandate helmets during lessons. For foiling, we strongly recommend wearing one at all skill levels.
Which helmet is best for wing foil?
Opt for a lightweight, hard-shell helmet that protects your ears and won't fill with water. If you're riding in the sun, a visor is a great addition.
Can I use a bike or ski helmet?
No, these helmets aren't designed for water. They'll fill up, float poorly, and the foam will degrade from salt exposure. Always choose a dedicated watersports helmet.
How do I know if the helmet is the right size?
It should stay firmly on your head without the chin strap and not move when you shake your head. If you ride in winter, try it on with your hood.
