Learn moreWingfoil Front Wings: Surface Area, Aspect Ratio, and Riding Style
Updated September 2026
The Front Wing is the heart of your foil setup. While the mast, fuselage, and stabilizer fine-tune performance, the Front Wing dictates lift, speed, and glide. Swapping out the Front Wing on a familiar foil will transform your session more than changing the complete foil. At GlissEvolution, our Pornichet shop has been around since 2005. We mount these wings on our own foils and ride them extensively before recommending them to you. This section is part of our wing foils. Also explore planes and wingsets, stabilizers, masts, and complete foils.
Choosing the Right Surface Area for Your Weight and Wind Conditions
Front Wing surface area is measured in cm². Your body weight is the primary factor in choosing the right size, followed by the wind conditions at your spot. A larger surface area allows for earlier take-off but results in a lower maximum speed.
| Rider weight | Learning | Progression | Allround | Strong Wind and Speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60 kg | 1500 to 1600 | 1000 to 1500 | 750 to 1000 | 600 to 750 |
| 70 kg | 1600 to 1750 | 1200 to 1600 | 900 to 1200 | 700 to 900 |
| 80 kg | 1750 to 1900 | 1350 to 1750 | 1000 to 1350 | 800 to 1000 |
| 90 kg | 1900 to 2000 | 1500 to 1900 | 1150 to 1500 | 900 to 1150 |
The size ranges flow smoothly from one to the next. As you move from one column, you'll find the next surface area directly below it, with no gaps in between. For learning, stick to the 1.500 to 2.000 cm² range. If you're a heavier rider or your local spot has lighter winds, opt for the higher end of that range. Starting with a wing that's too small will only lead to endless swimming. These figures apply to wings with a medium aspect ratio. A very high aspect ratio wing generates more lift for the same surface area. For example, an 1100 high aspect ratio wing will take off like a classic 1400 for an 80 kg rider, but it demands more precise steering.
Aspect Ratio: What It Really Changes
Aspect ratio is the relationship between wingspan and chord. A short, wide Front Wing with a low aspect ratio turns tightly, forgives trim errors, and pumps easily at low speeds. This design is ideal for learning, wave riding, and freestyle. A thin, long Front Wing with a high aspect ratio offers excellent glide, maintains speed, and re-accelerates with pumping. However, it is less forgiving of poor positioning and requires wider turns. High aspect ratio wings excel for downwind and dockstart riding. Intermediate ranges, which cover 90% of riders, are our best sellers.
Compatibility: The Mast Connection Is Key
You cannot choose a Front Wing independently of the mast. The connection point between the two is unique to each brand, and it can change between generations without backward compatibility. This means a recent Front Wing might not fit an older mast from the same brand. This is the case with F-ONE, where the Titan 1 and Titan 2 connections are not interchangeable. The latter uses two M8 screws, while the former uses three M6 screws. We have detailed this point in our Titan connection guide.
Slingshot's One-Lock system secures the Front Wing without screws. This primarily simplifies handling at the water's edge when you are trying multiple surfaces in the same session. In any case, provide us with your mast's product code before ordering. We will verify compatibility.
What's the Budget for a Front Wing?
As of September 2, 2026, prices range from €250 for a checked second-hand Front Wing to €1,499 for a high-performance high-modulus carbon Front Wing. Standard aluminum and carbon Front Wings are between 450 and €800, with high-modulus carbon above €800. The extra cost of high-modulus carbon translates to increased stiffness and reduced weight. This is especially important for pumping and downwind. For freeride, a well-chosen SLS Front Wing does the job.
The brands we offer
- F-ONE: The widest range in the department. It features Eagle, Sushi, Seven Seas, and SK8, all with Titan connection.
- Duotone: Glide, Carve, Crest, and Hyperglide. These are available in SLS and D/LAB versions.
- Armstrong: A clear range, named by aspect ratio. MA for medium aspect, HA and UHA for glide and downwind.
- Sabfoil: The Blackbird Leviathan, Razor, and Balz Pro are benchmarks in downwind and pumping.
- Slingshot, with the One-Lock system, and Core complete our Front Wing selection.
A Second Front Wing Instead of a Second Complete Foil
This is the advice we give most often in the shop. When a rider wants to cover light wind conditions without sacrificing their established wind sessions, a second Front Wing on the same mast and fuselage costs less than a complete foil. It transports in the same bag and can be swapped in five minutes on the beach. Start with the largest one. It will extend your rideable days the most.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Front Wing size should you start wingfoiling with?
Between 1.500 and 2.000 cm², depending on your weight and the wind at your spot: around 1.600 at 60 kg, 1.750 to 1.900 at 80 kg, up to 2.000 for more. A large surface takes off early and at low speed. This is important for learning. You will reduce the surface once flight is stable.
High or low aspect ratio wing?
Low aspect ratio is for learning, for waves, and for tight turns. High aspect ratio is for glide, downwind, and pumping. This comes at the cost of more demanding steering and wider turns.
Can any Front Wing be mounted on your foil?
No. The connection between the mast and the Front Wing is critical. It is specific to each brand, and sometimes to each generation. With F-ONE, for example, Titan 1 and Titan 2 connections are not compatible with each other. Give us your mast's product code. We will check before you order.
Should you switch to high modulus carbon?
For pumping and downwind, yes. Stiffness and weight are felt with every power delivery. For freeride, the difference does not always justify the price gap. A well-sized SLS wing will be more useful than a poorly chosen high modulus wing.
